1. New contact person: driving suitability register
Instead of the central traffic register, you will in future receive mail from the driving suitability register.
2. Changes to repayment periods
The repayment periods, i.e. the periods after which points are deleted from the register, are changing:
- Administrative offenses: Previously, the points were deleted after 2 years, now it is 2.5 years.
- Particularly serious administrative offenses: The repayment period is now 5 years.
- Criminal offences: Here, the period is extended from 5 to 10 years.
3. Individual repayment of points
One significant difference is that points are now redeemed individually. In the old system, each new point within the repayment period resulted in an extension of the period to a total of 5 years.
Example using the old system:
- 01.01.2010: Cell phone on ear — 1 point in Flensburg.
- Without a new point: Repayment on 01.01.2012.
- With a new point within 2 years: Repayment only on 01.01.2015.
In the new system, each point is repaid on its own, regardless of whether a new point is added within 2.5 years or not. The repayment always takes place after 2.5 years (or 5 or 10 years, depending on the seriousness of the crime).
4. Reduce the maximum score
Instead of up to 18 points, you can now only collect a maximum of 8 points. The old scores are converted accordingly.
5. Adjustment of scoring
The classification of administrative offenses and criminal offences has been adjusted:
- Example: If you drive 30 km/h too fast in urban areas, the new system will only receive 1 point instead of the previous 3 points.
- Attention: For offenses that have so far been punished with just one point (e.g. cell phone on ear), it remains at one point.
6. New seminars: driving aptitude seminar
The previous ASP seminar (advanced seminar for points problems) is omitted. Instead, there is the driving aptitude seminar, where you can reduce a point, but only if the score is between 1 and 5 points.
These changes should lead to a clearer and fairer use of the points system and thus increase road safety. Pay attention to the new rules to avoid points and protect your driving license.
