What exactly is B196 anyway?
In contrast to motorcycle driving license categories A1, A2 and A, the B196 “class” is an extension of class B — a key number with the number 196. A decisive advantage of this training is that no separate driving test is required after completion. Instead, participants receive a certificate, which they present to the road traffic office. There, the key number 196 is added to the existing driving license class B. In plain language, this means:
- The key number 196 does not allow a level driving license, as in class A1 (promotion to A2 with a shortened education). Full education is required if you want to move up to A2 or A.
- The key number 196 is a national number — the authorization is only valid in Germany! For trips abroad, class A1 is often required in order to be able to drive vehicles of this class.
This training is ideal for car drivers who want to expand their driving skills and experience the freedom of motorcycling without having to undergo full motorcycle training. It is an excellent opportunity to discover the enthusiasm for motorcycling while increasing road safety.
What are the requirements for B196?
First of all, the minimum age: You must be at least 25 years old. You should also have had a class B driving license for five years or more. These requirements are crucial because they should ensure that you have already gained enough road experience before you travel with a motorcycle. With the B196 permit, you can then drive light motorcycles up to 125 cc, a great way to enter the world of two-wheelers or increase your mobility in urban traffic.
What is the training process for B196?
The training begins with a sound theoretical basis, which is taught in four double lessons (90 minutes each) of special motorcycle lessons. In these sessions, participants learn everything about the specifics of motorcycling, road safety and rules, and motorcycle maintenance and care.
After the theoretical knowledge has been imparted, it is time for the practical phase. This comprises at least five double hours (90 minutes each) and offers a varied mix of basic driving tasks as well as trips in various traffic situations — in the city, in the countryside and on the motorway. This practical experience is crucial as it helps participants build trust and competence in handling the motorcycle in different riding conditions.
