Category A

Unrestricted motorcycle license

Overview

Minimum Age

24 years for direct acquisition. 20 years with 2 years of prior possession of A2.

Tests

For direct entry: You'll have both a theory test and a 70-minute practical test. When upgrading from A2 to A: There's no theory test, and the practical test is shortened to 60 minutes.

Requirements

You'll need a vision test, a certificate of participation in a first aid course, a passport photo, and your ID card. Additionally, if you're upgrading from an A2 to an A license, you'll also need your current license.

Validity

No expiration date.

Training

Theoretical training includes 12 double lessons of basic theory and 4 double lessons of additional theory for direct entry. For those upgrading from A2, it consists of 6 double lessons of basic theory and 4 double lessons of additional practical theory. The number of practice hours depends on your driving skills and vehicle handling. Direct entry includes 12 special 45-minute sessions, while no special sessions are required for upgrading from A2 to A.

Specifications

With an A license, you automatically obtain the AM, A1, and A2 motorcycle license categories.

Specifications

With the A2 motorcycle license, you automatically receive the AM and A1 licenses as well. This is the second level of motorcycle licenses, building upon A1. After that, you can obtain the full A license after two more years to allow for riding with unrestricted engine performance.

The number of practice hours depends on driving behavior and vehicle control for both direct entry and those with prior experience. Special training consists of 12 sessions, each lasting 45 minutes.

Specifications

The AM license is automatically included with the A1 motorcycle license. The A1 license is the first level of motorcycle licenses, followed by A2 at age 18 and A at age 20. This allows you to gradually adjust to increasing engine performance.

With an engine capacity of up to 125 cc, a maximum power of 11 kW (15 hp), and a power-to-weight ratio of up to 0.1 kW/kg. Additionally, you are allowed to operate three-wheeled motor vehicles.

125cc motorcycle training for car license holders

Overview

Minimum Age

25 years.

Tests

None. You only need to complete a rider training course.

Requirements

You need to have held a car driver's license for at least 5 years.

There is no expiration date.

Training

The theoretical training includes 4 double lessons of additional practical theory and 10 sessions of 45 minutes each.

Specifications

The code 196 is only recognized in Germany.

Motorcycles

with an engine capacity of up to 125 cc, a maximum power of 11 kW (15 hp), and a power-to-weight ratio of no more than 0.1 kW/kg.

Three-wheeled motor vehicles (e.g. trikes)

with an engine capacity of over 50 cc (for combustion engines) or a top speed of over 45 km/h. However, the power is limited to a maximum of 15 kW (20 hp).

Category AM

Scooter license

Overview

Minimum Age

15 years.

Tests

The training concludes with a theory test and a practical test, which lasts 55 minutes.

You'll need a vision test, a certificate of participation in a first aid course, a passport photo, and your ID card.

There is no expiration date.

Training

Theoretical training includes 12 double lessons of basic theory and 2 double lessons of additional practical theory. There is no set number of mandatory practice hours. The number of practice hours depends on your driving behavior and vehicle control.

Specifications

With this license, you can also drive small vehicles (L6e) or so-called "moped cars." These are similar to a conventional car but are significantly lighter, smaller, and can go up to a maximum speed of 45 km/h.

You're allowed to drive

Motor scooter

with an engine capacity of up to 50 cc, a top speed of 45 km/h, and a power output of up to 4 kW (6 hp).

Three-wheeled motor vehicles (e.g. trikes)

with an engine capacity of up to 50 cc for spark-ignition engines, up to 500 cc for compression-ignition engines, a top speed of 45 km/h, and a power output of up to 4 kW (6 hp). Additionally, the vehicle must not have more than 2 seats and a maximum empty weight of 270 kg.

Light four-wheeled motor vehicles

with up to 50 cc engine capacity (spark-ignition) or 500 cc (compression-ignition), a top speed of 45 km/h, and a maximum power of 6 kW (8 hp) or 4 kW (6 hp) for road quads. They must have no more than 2 seats and weigh up to 425 kg when empty..

Mofa Test Certificate

Moped license

Overview

Minimum Age

15 years. The theory test can be taken up to 3 months before.

Tests

Only a theory test is required, with no practical test needed.

Requirements

You'll need a vision test, and a certificate of participation in a first aid course.

Validity

There is no expiration date.

Training

You’ll attend six double lessons of theory, each lasting 90 minutes. The practical training consists of at least one double lesson of 90 minutes.

Specifications

Personal transporters (e.g., Segways) also require a moped license if you plan to use them on public roads.
